Arla Foods' state-of-the-art plant near London is one of Europe's largest fresh milk dairies. Up to 1.6 billion liters of milk are processed and packaged here every year. More than a decade has passed since ek robotics implemented one of the world's largest automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems in industrial use at Arla Foods in the UK.
 

During this time, the transport solution has delivered impressive performance at Arla Foods:

> 90 customized transport robots have been delivered.

> more than 15 billion liters of milk have been moved.

> over 44 million transport orders have been successfully completed.

> almost 11 million Tetratrainers have been picked up by the palletizers – this corresponds to a cycle of 15 to 30 seconds.

AGV solutions with clean room requirements

A leading German family-owned cheese dairy has been relying on the automation expertise of ek robotics for the production of dairy products for over 20 years. In 2024, the existing automated guided vehicle system at the production site was extensively modernized and expanded to include a third, custom-made transport robot. The result: a significant increase in efficiency, greater flexibility and a system that is optimally aligned with the high hygiene and process requirements of food production.

The modernization started with a detailed material flow simulation that revealed optimization potential and enabled efficient control of the expanded route. Bottlenecks were identified, transport routes shortened and the system control was more precisely aligned with the production processes to ensure a consistently smooth material flow. The new AGV now includes three stainless steel vehicles that are specially designed for the operating conditions in food production.
