From the digital learning platform to customized customer training – Roman Konrad, Training & Knowledge Manager at ek robotics, is responsible for knowledge transfer and the training landscape within the company. As head of the ek Academy, he ensures that knowledge is shared, developed, and communicated in a lively manner – both internally and externally. In this interview, he talks about how it all began, what excites him about transport robotics, and where he personally recharges his batteries.
Roman, how did you come to ek robotics?
My journey at ek robotics began in January 2017 – at that time still in the role of consultant for intralogistics and material flow simulation. I supported leading industrial companies with simulation-based analyses and consulting services. A project for Arla Foods in the UK was particularly memorable: I developed a material flow simulation for a new AGV layout with around 100 vehicles in order to significantly increase production output. In addition to analyzing and optimizing intralogistics processes, I was also active in digital factory planning and was able to develop many innovative concepts. Three years later, the idea of imparting knowledge in a long-term and structured manner gave rise to the ek Academy—since then, I have been responsible for our internal and external training courses.
What exactly is the ek Academy and who benefits from it?
The ek Academy is our central competence and training center. We develop learning content that is tailored precisely to the needs of our target groups—both for our colleagues and for customers and service partners. In addition to on-site training courses, we offer a wide range of digital training courses via the Online Academy. What makes this special is that the knowledge is cross-departmental, available at any time, and continuously expanded. In this way, we create a learning environment that perfectly combines modern knowledge management and practical application.
What tasks are part of your area of responsibility at the Academy?
My area of responsibility is very diverse. A central focus is on knowledge management, i.e., the systematic collection, processing, and sharing of our internal know-how. We make knowledge accessible to everyone and promote exchange throughout the company.
In addition, I develop and maintain the technical infrastructure of our Online Academy, for example by programming new features or optimizing processes. I organize internal training courses, put together customer-specific training packages, and work on the multimedia preparation of content in image and sound. An exciting side note: we also produce photo and video material for other areas of the company, such as sales, marketing, and internal communications. This creates a vibrant connection between knowledge, communication, and brand.
What fascinates you most about transport robotics?
I am impressed by the precision and reliability with which our systems perform complex transport tasks. It often looks effortless, and that is precisely what fascinates me. Behind this "ease" lies enormous technical intelligence. Seeing how our robots make intralogistics more efficient, safer, and more sustainable never ceases to inspire me.
Which project have you enjoyed the most so far?
A personal highlight was the digitization of our Level 1 customer training courses. Previously, these took place exclusively on site. Today, our customers can complete much of the content online. We professionally filmed the training content in-house and digitally prepared it for all vehicle types. This enables our customers to prepare their teams for our systems early on and in a practical manner. The specific functional training courses still take place on site at the customer's premises, so that we can respond individually to customer needs – an optimal mix of e-learning and personal support.
Is there an AGV project that you are particularly excited about?
Definitely the project at RHI Magnesita in Radenthein, Austria. There, we are automating almost the entire production process for refractory products. With a fleet of custom-built transport robots, we move special load carriers weighing up to 16 tons. This system is truly impressive. It clearly demonstrates what is possible with modern transport robotics today. For me, it's a prime example of how technology and precision go hand in hand.
What do you particularly appreciate about working at ek robotics?
Definitely the team spirit. At ek robotics, knowledge is shared, not guarded. Everyone supports each other, and that's what makes working together so enjoyable. The camaraderie, open exchange, and mutual appreciation create an atmosphere in which you can develop both personally and professionally.
How do you find balance in your everyday working life?
My family and sports are the perfect balance for me. I also have a great passion for filmmaking. I produce films for family, friends, and even companies. I love seeing people's enthusiasm when they watch the finished work—those moments are priceless.
With his passion for knowledge transfer, his technical expertise, and his enthusiasm for cinematic creativity, Roman Konrad shows that learning at ek robotics goes far beyond traditional training. The ek Academy combines technology, knowledge, and inspiration. And Roman's commitment ensures that this combination grows every day.
